Serving the Challenging Patient: Introduction to Pain Science Basics

 

Objectives:

  • Describe and differentiate nociceptive pain, neuropathic pain and nociplastic pain mechanisms.
  • Describe the basic neurophysiology of the pain mechanisms.
  • List objective examination techniques for each pain mechanism.
  • Discuss treatment similarities and differences for each pain mechanism, including interdisciplinary approaches to pain treatment.
  • List risk factors for developing chronic pain.

Instructor:

Soren Grieve, PT, DPT is Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. She is the chair of the Exercise and Health Sciences department and director of the Center for Interprofessional Education, Practice and Scholarship at BCU. Dr. Grieve completed certifications as a Therapeutic Pain Specialist and Spinal Manual Therapist through the International Spain and Pain Institute/Evidence in Motion in 2017 while working at the Sioux City CBOC of the Sioux Falls VAMC. She teaches classes in professional behavior and communication, motor learning/motor control, neurological rehabilitation, rehab interventions, healthcare Spanish, and pain science. She also supervises the Chronic Pain Program in the Briar Cliff pro bono PT clinic.
